Omnissa is excited to partner with Microsoft to introduce a public preview of Omnissa App Volumes integration with App attach in Azure Virtual Desktop. We’ve now made it easy to take advantage of the powerful app delivery and lifecycle management capabilities of App Volumes and App Volumes Apps on Demand to reduce app management time and costs in Azure Virtual Desktop environments.

App attach in Azure Virtual Desktop and App Volumes integration will be available directly from the Azure portal and includes integration with Microsoft Entra ID for enhanced security.

For Azure Virtual Desktop admins unfamiliar with App Volumes, our app delivery technology is used today by thousands of customers to simplify app management across on-premises and cloud virtual desktop and published app environments. App Volumes abstracts Windows apps from the operating system so the same app copy can be delivered to many desktops or app hosts, giving admins the ability to maintain a single Windows OS image. The outcome is that admins need less time to manage apps and images, and less infrastructure is required to support those apps and images. This approach enables IT teams to scale by allowing individual app owners to independently manage their applications, without needing to touch the Windows OS image.

The integration extends these same benefits to Azure Virtual Desktop environments, where App Volumes can be used with App attach to further reduce app management time and infrastructure costs and to remove app compatibility challenges. Customers using App Volumes report 99% app compatibility and little to no need for specialized packaging skills. It’s as simple as capturing an app installation once and delivering it across your environment.

For customers who have been prevented from moving their virtual desktop and app deployments to the public cloud because of reliance on data center apps that cannot be ported to modern package types such as MSIX, App Volumes enables those apps to run seamlessly in Azure Virtual Desktop. Further, partner solutions from Rimo3, Access IT Automation, and Liquit by Recast leverage our app capture technology to automate packaging and testing of apps at scale.

Omnissa has introduced capabilities in App Volumes to help customers realize even more value, which can also be utilized with App attach in Azure Virtual Desktop. It started with Apps on Demand, which allows an app to be delivered based on when the user needs an app — decreasing wait times for installation, reducing surface attack area on Windows devices, and eliminating complex app packaging. Recently, we announced App Volumes support for persistent virtual desktops, giving customers with classic desktop environments the same benefits non-persistent customers have enjoyed for years. With persistent support, Azure Virtual Desktop customers can also utilize App Volumes to drive down app management costs.

“Our collaboration with Omnissa helps customers maximize the value of their Azure Virtual Desktop environment,” said Scott Manchester, Microsoft VP of Product for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365. “Omnissa’s support for App attach in Azure Virtual Desktop enhances our ability to deliver and manage any customer application seamlessly, whether on-premises or in the cloud.”
